ADHD Haunts Children Into Adulthood, Study Shows

Young adults who have ADHD are more likely than their peers to get fired, to shun birth control and become parents by age 21 and to have higher credit card debt and less savings, according to a 13-year study reported over the weekend.

Although estimates vary, many children with ADHD go on to have it as adults, says psychologist Mariellen Fischer of the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Government figures show that about 1 out of 20 adults have ADHD.

Fischer released her study with co-author Russell Barkley at the American Psychological Association meeting in Washington. They followed 147 children with ADHD by age 7, comparing them with 76 neighbor children who didn't have the disorder. Most ADHD children took medication for a couple of years, but few were being treated by their early 20s, Fischer says.

New Warning for Strattera

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising health care professionals about a new warning for Strattera, a drug approved for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children. The labeling is being updated with a bolded warning about the potential for severe liver injury following two reports (a teenager and an adult) in patients who had been treated with Strattera for several months, both of whom recovered.

Strattera - Side Effects

A drug used to treat children for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, has had some serious psychiatric side-effects, a study shows.

The federal government's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has been assessing the drug Strattera, which will be available widely under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, Fairfax reports.

Strattera was the probable cause of one child's explosive mood swings and erratic behaviour, including an attempt to open the door of a moving car, according to the TGA.

It also implicated the drug in aggressive outbursts by a 12-year-old, in which she ripped out her fingernails.

The TGA has identified 23 cases of probable or possible side-effects from Strattera.

They include suicidal thoughts, agitation, and serious physical problems such as growth retardation, weight loss, chest pains and swollen testicles.

ADHD drugs may have 'addictive and emotional' side effects

Stimulants like Ritalin and Adderall increase the flow of neurotransmitters in the cerebral cortex, which controls working memory.

That added stimulation ends up helping people with ADHD focus and concentrate. It ends up settling them down.

.... side effects can include insomnia, anxiety, irritability and nervousness, high blood pressure and heart beat, and lack of appetite -- hence their use as weight loss drugs.
